3 easy actions that boost nature
This windbreak was originally an old spruce fence,
which has been toppled in several storms.
We then really thought
that we would have it cleared,
but last year we had a visit
from the local farmers' association
in relation to an examination
of the nature on the farm
and there we found out that very unique nature can arise just by letting it be.
There are some special flowers including Field Scabious,
which is the only habitat
for a species of bees.
There are also thistles and
such which we see as weeds,
but they are actually good
for butterflies and insects.
Now that we have learned that this windbreak contains unique nature
we have decided to let it be as it is.
The dead trees we have here
have always bothered me.
They have never been pretty to look at,
but we have learned that they
actually have a function.
The dead trees help a lot of insects and maybe they will become hollow
which would let woodpeckers
move into them.
Before, I was tired of looking at these trees, but now when I come by
in my tractor, I actually think that there is something sculptural
about such tall structures that protrude towards the sky,
so now I actually see something
beautiful in them.
In the past, we would have mowed a roadside like this one,
but when it's just a low vegetation
like this one,
we're fine with it just being allowed to grow over the summer
and that is also our goal in the future.
The flowers will get some peace.
The flowers really do make the roadside nicer to look at,
and on top of that they are
beneficial for the insects.
I have learned that without really doing
anything we get more good nature.
I never thought we had any special nature here on the property.
We do not have any small streams
or a beech forest,
but the visit from the local farmers' association made us see
that we actually have
some very good nature.
There are different flowers
in the area depending on the seasons,
and my wife loves to come out here
and pick a bouquet of field flowers
to take back home and put on the table.
